Notifications

MailShield keeps you informed about your email security through configurable alerts and notifications.

Notification Types

Score Change Alerts

Get notified when your domain's security score changes significantly:

  • Rating change: When your grade changes (e.g., B → C)
  • Significant drop: When score decreases by more than 10 points
  • Threshold breach: When score falls below your configured minimum

DNS Change Alerts

Be alerted when email-related DNS records change:

  • SPF record modifications
  • DKIM selector changes
  • DMARC policy updates
  • MTA-STS policy changes

Report Alerts

Notifications about incoming reports:

  • High failure rate: When DMARC authentication failures exceed 20%
  • New reports: Optional notification for each new report received

Scheduled Reports

Regular summaries of your email security:

  • Weekly summary: Sent every Monday
  • Monthly summary: Sent on the 1st of each month

Alert Thresholds

Score Threshold

Set a minimum acceptable score:

  1. Go to Settings → Notifications
  2. Find Score Threshold
  3. Enter your minimum score (e.g., 70)
  4. You'll be alerted if any domain falls below this

Failure Rate Threshold

The failure rate threshold (20%) is currently fixed but alerts you when:

  • More than 20% of emails fail DMARC authentication
  • This may indicate an attack or misconfiguration

Email Notification Format

Email notifications include:

  • Subject: Clear description of the alert
  • Domain: Which domain is affected
  • Details: What changed or triggered the alert
  • Link: Direct link to investigate in MailShield

Example subject lines:

  • "Security score dropped for example.com"
  • "DMARC record changed for example.org"
  • "High authentication failure rate for company.io"

Best Practices

For Small Teams

Enable email notifications for critical alerts:

  • Score rating changes
  • High failure rates
  • Weekly summaries

For Large Organizations

Consider a tiered approach:

  • Security team: All alerts via email
  • IT staff: DNS changes and score drops
  • Management: Weekly/monthly summaries only

For MSPs

Managing multiple clients:

  • Enable in-app for routine monitoring
  • Email only for critical issues
  • Weekly summaries for client reporting

Troubleshooting

Not Receiving Emails

  1. Check your spam/junk folder
  2. Verify your email address in account settings
  3. Ensure the notification type is enabled
  4. Check that you have permission in the organization

Too Many Notifications

  1. Disable "New reports" notification
  2. Adjust score threshold
  3. Use in-app only for less critical alerts

Delayed Notifications

Notifications are typically sent within minutes. Delays may occur:

  • During high volume periods
  • If email delivery is slow
  • After major service updates

Secure your email infrastructure with confidence.
